This led him to consent to the pig kidney transplant when the medical team proposed it.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"981\" data-end=\"1215\">Slayman\u2019s pig-to-human kidney transplant operation lasted <strong data-start=\"1039\" data-end=\"1053\">four hours<\/strong>, and the transplanted organ began producing urine immediately afterward.<br data-start=\"1126\" data-end=\"1129\" \/>To date, the kidney has been functioning normally, and he no longer requires dialysis.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1217\" data-end=\"1434\">Researchers removed harmful pig genes from the donor kidney and inactivated porcine retroviruses that could potentially infect humans.
