{"id":2661,"date":"2025-10-25T15:36:48","date_gmt":"2025-10-25T08:36:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/museum.pctu.com.vn\/?p=2661"},"modified":"2025-12-12T10:08:53","modified_gmt":"2025-12-12T03:08:53","slug":"the-worlds-first-pig-to-human-heart-transplant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/museum.pctu.com.vn\/index.php\/language\/en\/2025\/10\/25\/the-worlds-first-pig-to-human-heart-transplant\/","title":{"rendered":"The World\u2019s First Pig-to-Human Heart Transplant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"64\" data-end=\"322\">The surgery performed on <strong data-start=\"89\" data-end=\"108\">January 7, 2022<\/strong> marked the first time in history that a pig organ was transplanted into a living human being.<br data-start=\"202\" data-end=\"205\" \/>The patient, who received a <strong data-start=\"233\" data-end=\"258\">gene-edited pig heart<\/strong>, survived the operation and initially showed signs of recovery.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"324\" data-end=\"588\">Before this live human surgery, in 2021, surgeons at <strong data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"399\">NYU Langone Health<\/strong> in New York had transplanted gene-edited pig kidneys into two brain-dead individuals. The kidneys were not rejected and functioned normally while the bodies were maintained on ventilators.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"590\" data-end=\"850\">Most xenotransplantation research to date had been conducted on primates. However, researchers hoped that this successful gene-edited pig heart transplant would pave the way for clinical animal-to-human organ transplantation and help overcome current barriers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"852\" data-end=\"1393\">Researchers had previously submitted an application to the <strong data-start=\"911\" data-end=\"954\">U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA)<\/strong> to begin clinical trials of pig-to-human heart transplantation, but the request was denied.<br data-start=\"1046\" data-end=\"1049\" \/>According to <strong data-start=\"1062\" data-end=\"1088\">Dr. Muhammad Mohiuddin<\/strong>, the lead surgeon of the xenotransplantation program at the University of Maryland, the FDA was initially concerned about ensuring that donor pigs were sourced from approved medical-grade facilities and requested that the team first perform <strong data-start=\"1330\" data-end=\"1368\">10 pig-to-baboon heart transplants<\/strong> before moving to humans.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\" data-start=\"1395\" data-end=\"1867\">However, <strong data-start=\"1404\" data-end=\"1433\">57-year-old David Bennett<\/strong> gave Mohiuddin\u2019s team an exceptional opportunity.<br data-start=\"1483\" data-end=\"1486\" \/>Bennett had relied on a heart-lung bypass machine for nearly two months and could no longer maintain circulation due to severe arrhythmias.
